Kenneth Olsen
IP Counsel
Kenneth Olsen has 35 years of Intellectual Property and Intellectual Asset Management experience. Ken was most recently the interim vice president for Intellectual Property for Avaya, Inc., where he was responsible for all aspects of the intellectual property law and licensing activities of Avaya’s global $5 billion business.
Before Avaya, Ken was of counsel to Howrey & Simon (now Howrey LLP) and a director and vice president for business development of Maxiam®, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Howrey. Maxiam provided consulting services in the Intellectual Property and Intellectual Asset Management marketplace.
Prior to joining Maxiam in 2002, Ken spent more than five years with Sun Microsystems, Inc. During his time as Sun's vice president and chief intellectual property counsel, Ken was responsible for all acquisition, licensing and litigation issues related to Sun's patent, trademark and copyright portfolios, as well as all legal issues arising from the activities of the chief technology officer and Sun Labs.
Prior to joining Sun, Ken spent 22 years with Schlumberger Limited; the last 12 years spent as chief IP counsel in charge of Schlumberger's world-wide department of 35 professionals at locations in Asia, North America and Europe. His responsibilities included all aspects of Schlumberger's IP rights, including acquisition, licensing and litigation.
Before attending law school at New York University School of Law, Ken spent one year as an engineer and five years on active duty in the Civil Engineer Corps of the U.S. Navy at duty stations in Boston, Central Florida, Saigon, South Vietnam and Pearl Harbor and has retired from the Naval Reserve as a commander. Ken’s undergraduate education was at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he received a BSEE in 1963.
